BET...I've Got Your Lifetime Achievement Honoree
I've been watching the BET Awards since way back when Whitney Houston was singing live and not offending anyone. In whole, BET has had some major hits and misses. The annual awards show in a lot of ways has evolved. From great to good to horrible. It's now become as bad as the MTV VMAs with the constant random promotion of artists and the selling of its soul to corporate suits. I can remember artists like Jill Scott being asked to perform on the show (not just in lifetime achievement award segments either). Now we get Niki Minaj...I know, who? The awards have become an endless parade of bad live rap and awful mainstream R&B (when they decide to actually let R&B onto the show). BET Awards have had no soul. Except...when it's time for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
It's a sad testament that when 30-or-40-something year old acts can outshine all of the new artists. That has been a regular occurrence on these shows. Since 2001, BET has honored: Whitney Houston, Earth Wind & Fire, James Brown, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Al Green, and The O'Jays. Now that's Black Star Power! Not a single disappointment on that list. So who are they giving it to this year? They've yet to announce it, but I've got one band that never gets its just due. A band that everyone knows and sings, yet never gets honored on these shows, and it's time for that to change.
BET, give the Lifetime Achievement Award to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.
Imagine the set list: Joy & Pain, Back In Stride, Happy Feelings, Can't Get Over You, Silky Soul, Southern Girl, Golden Time Of Day, and of course, Before I Let Go.
Give these guys their honor!
